Object 1: Mummy of Hornedjitef

The Mummy of Hornedjitef stands 194.5 cm tall and is 60 cm wide. The coffin is made of wood and is ornately painted.

The Mummy of Hornedjitef, which is housed in the British Museum, was a priest in Egypt almost 1,800 years ago.

He was the priest at the temple of Amun and died at an old age at about 220 BC. It would have taken 70 days for the mummification progress. During that time, some of Hornedjitef's body parts, like the brain, were removed.

He was also treated with salt and chemicals to dry the body so he would not decay. After this was complete, Hornedjitef would have been wrapped in linen cloth and been given the painted mask to put over his face.

Then, he would be put in the final coffin and buried in the tomb, thus completing the mummification and sending him on his way to the next world.
